David Packard and William Hewlett, both Stanford University graduates, decided to start their own business in 1934. They opened their first workshop in 1937 with a $538 investment and an old drilling machine as a tool. Thus began Hewlett Packard’s (HP) journey.
David and William started making audio oscillators for $54.50. The Walt Disney Studios were their first customer. She spent money on audio generators in order to make the Fantasy cartoon. During World War II, 1939-1945, they worked on government orders, which contributed to the company’s rapid growth. Frederick Terman, a Stanford University professor who vouched for them in obtaining a loan, assisted them in obtaining the largest government orders. He later worked as a consultant for Hewlett-Packard.
